Armed robbers shot a Gwanda businessman, who ran Mazwi Beerhall at Buvuma Business Centre, five times on Sunday and he later died at a Bulawayo hospital on Monday.

The incident, which was confirmed by Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Loveness Mangena, took place at the business centre.

Insp. Mangena said Unkemetsi Maphosa, 27, was sleeping with his wife Unkemetsi Makwaiba, 27, when they were woken up by a padlock alarm and went to investigate.

“They saw three accused persons who introduced themselves as police officers and ordered the complainants to open the door. One of the accused fired towards the complainants and hit Maphosa once on the right hand, three times on the pelvis and once in the belly,” said Insp. Mangena.

The police spokesperson added that the suspects proceeded to the back of the shop where they tried to force open the storeroom and the couple made good their escape to a nearby homestead.

The suspects ransacked the house ad stole a box of Breeze and Storm cigarettes, a Samsung cell phone and R4 135.

All the suspects reportedly wore Ellesse tracksuits and they are still at large.

Insp. Mangena urged the public not to resist armed robbers and advised businessmen to form security committees to thwart robberies.
