The Manicaland Transport Association issued a statement today expressing condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in a recent accident involving a member company, Tenda Transport, on the Harare-Mutare Road.Isau Muupfumi, Chairman of the MTA, urged all drivers to prioritize caution on this route due to the high volume of truck traffic, both day and night. The statement emphasized the critical need for improved road safety measures.
The MTA implored the government to
Expedite the refurbishment of the railway infrastructure to lessen reliance on trucks for transporting goods, thereby reducing traffic congestion and potential accidents.
Bolster enforcement efforts regarding driver qualifications and vehicle roadworthiness by fully supporting initiatives like the Ministry of Transport's bus operator associations. This would ensure proper licensing and maintenance of vehicles.
Reinstitute highway patrols along the Harare-Mutare Road. The continuous presence of patrol vehicles is seen as a deterrent to reckless driving and would complement existing static roadblocks.
The association pledged to extend support to those injured in the accident and their families. The statement concluded with a powerful call to action for all stakeholders to work together to enhance road safety and prevent future tragedies, "Together, let us strive to bring safety and sanity back to our roads, honouring the memory of those we have lost."
