Following the rise in violent crimes involving the use of dangerous weapons, Officer Commanding Kwekwe District Chief Superintendent Ison Chapeta has banned the carrying of dangerous weapons in public areas effective June 1, 2024.

In a statement, Chief Sup Chapeta says the ban runs until June 22, 2024.

The weapons banned include machetes, knobkerries, swords, knives, spears or daggers, catapults and other offensive or traditional weapons

Failure to comply with the order attracts a jail term not exceeding six months or a level five fine.

“This is due to the increase of cases of violence using machetes, knobkerries, swords, knives, spears or daggers, catapults and other offensive weapons or other traditional weapons.

“Officers Commanding Police Districts are regulating officers for areas under them in terms of the law. The notices are issued in terms of section 4(1) of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act Chapter 11:23,” he said.

Some cases in which the traditional weapons are used include assaults, robbery, murder, domestic violence, malicious damage to property, unlawful entry and theft.
