LSZ says no indication Moyo was bribed by Rodney Dangarembizi

Agmos Moyo

The Law Society of Zimbabwe has dismissed a South African’s firms’ allegations of unprofessional conduct against top Harare lawyer Agmos Moyo.

“Council resolved that the respondent be found not guilty of any unprofessional conduct and that the complaint be dismissed. We will, therefore, proceed to close the file and will not take any further action. Be advised accordingly,” wrote LSZ secretary Edward Mapara to Umbrella Holdings and Goldstone.

Umbrella Holdings and Goldstone through directors Antony Denga and Owen Sher had alleged that Moyo could have been bribed through a property sale.

Moyo was Umbrella Holdings and Goldstone’s legal representative after the South African company engaged Kantor Immerman, the law firm where Moyo is a partner.

Denga and Sher accused Moyo of negotiating to buy immovable property from Rodney Dangarembizi without consulting them (as Umbrella Holdings and Goldstone).

Umbrella Holdings and Goldstone had preferred theft charges of over US$1 million against Dangarembizi including that of US$580 000 that Dangarembizi allegedly received from Denga and converted to personal use instead of agreed transaction.

In their complaints to LSZ, Denga and Sher said that they suspected that the property transaction could be a bribe meant to destroy their case against Dangarembizi, implying collusion between their lawyer and the accused person worked against them in court.

Moyo recused himself from representing Umbrella Holdings and Goldstone account after the litany of complaints raised by Denga against him.

LSZ says it found Umbrella Holdings and Goldstone a disgruntled client that presented no substantiation for its allegations and should have appealed the unfavourable court ruling if they believed that their case had merit.

“Council at its meeting held on the 30 of August 2022 considered your complaint and the respondent’s responses. Council noted that this complaint was made by disgruntled litigants.

“You failed to substantiate your allegations against the respondent. You were dissatisfied with the decision of the court and you ought to have sought recourse from the same court,” wrote Mapara in his letter to Denga and Sher.

Accordingly the council cleared Moyo of any wrongdoing.

“Council was of the view that the complaint was without merit and ought to be dismissed,” wrote Mapara.
