Earlier this month the 21st China Medical Team left their Parirenyatwa Hospital base for two days to conduct a two-day mobile clinic activity at Bikita Mine for mine workers and surrounding residents.

The team attended to 800 patients, performed over 200 sessions of acupuncture treatment, and conducted dozens of electrocardiograms.

Despite the lack of surgical lights and adequate medical equipment, the team successfully performed surgery on two patients.

The medical team also discussed with local medical staff on common and difficult diseases in various areas and, received high praise from local doctors and nurses.

The medical team departed Harare at 6:00 a.m. on June 19 to make the five hour trip and prepare for busy couple of days.

By 8:00 a.m. on June 20, mine workers and surrounding residents had arrived at the site. The team immediately began medical activities.

Associate Professor Zhang Yulong from the Department of Urology gave a lecture on “Talking about AIDS,” providing knowledge on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment to mine workers in simple and clear language. Associate Professor Xu Jing and Associate Professor Zhang Yulong served as training instructors, providing on-site first aid guidance and interactive learning to the workers, who were highly enthusiastic and focused on every detail.

Associate Professor Xiao Zhiqiang and Dr. Hu Sha from the Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine introduced Chinese culture and taught the traditional Chinese fitness exercise “Baduanjin.”

The mobile clinic was in full swing, with doctors from different specialties providing medical services based on their rich clinical experience and excellent medical skills, relieving the suffering of workers from both China and Zimbabwe and providing corresponding health guidance.

David Mwanza, the mine manager, expressed his gratitude to the Chinese medical team for traveling thousands of miles to Bikita to treat the local people. He admired the dedication and professionalism of the Chinese doctors and hoped that the friendship between China and Zimbabwe would last forever.
