Debtor assaulted for refusing to pay drunk creditor

Michael Mashiri

Two men have been ordered to deposit US$100 each as bail after they allegedly assaulted another because of money he owed their accomplice.

Francis Chibweza, 30, of Park Town, Waterfalls, and Elias Mugombe, 31, New Malborough, appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates' Courts charged with assault.

The State, through prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu, alleges that on June 28, 2024, at around 2300 hours, the complainant, Vhengere George was at Rainball Towers, Harare, and he called one Onias Kufa whom he owed money wanting to give him part of it.

When he arrived, Vhengere realised that Kufa was very drunk and he opted not to give him the money.

This did not go well with Kufa, who then started shouting at Vhengere, and called the accused, saying he wanted them to help him discipline Vhengere.

Vhengere was left with the two accused who assaulted him while demanding the money.

As a result, Vhengere dislocated his left hand, and he reported the matter to the police.

The two were apprehended.

They will appear in court on July 12, 2024 for a trial date.
