A man who was part of team that was moving around the city pretending to be detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics has been taken to court.
Tatenda Jambo, 32, of Hopley, appeared before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa at the Harare Magistrate's Courts charged with robbery.
The State, through prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti, alleges that detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics were informed that there were five men who were moving around pretending to be detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics.
The accused were said to be armed with a firearm, knives, button sticks, electric teaser and were firing shots and assaulting victims during the time they were making their fake arrests.
The State alleges that they would demand money and other valuables from unsuspecting drug dealers.
It is alleged that on May 7, 2024, detectives were informed that the accused were driving in a Toyota Wish and they had arrested two men for allegedly dealing in drugs and were demanding money.
The court was informed that they were to receive the demanded money from one Bright Mavhudzi at Harare Central police car park.
The detectives then approached the accused who were all outside negotiating with Mavhudzi.
Sensing imminent arrest, they started running away. The detectives then fired a warning shot and the accused managed to escape.
One Joel Ncube then jumped into the car and started driving away. The detectives fired two shots and managed to deflate the rear left wheel and the right front wheel immobilising the car in the process.
This led to Ncube's arrest and First Chisakiwa was arrested at the same time.
Another suspect, Simbarashe Chiyangwa was arrested after a follow up on the same day, Jambo and one other accused person are still at large.
It is alleged that on July 22, 2024, detectives were informed that Jambo was moving around Harare masquerading as a detective from CID Drugs and Narcotics.
A follow up was made leading to his arrest.
A search was done on Jambo when he was arrested and four satchets of dagga were recovered.
He was ordered to appear in court on July 30, 2024.
