A private citizen, Munyaradzi Masiyiwa, represented by Shava Law Chambers, has written to the National Social Security Authority requesting information and documents related to the purchase of 526 hectares of land in Chegutu in 2003.
The request comes after the Auditor General's report revealed that NSSA had not taken possession of the land despite purchasing it over two decades ago.
Masiyiwa's lawyers have cited the Constitution of Zimbabwe and the Freedom of Information Act, demanding transparency and accountability from the public entity. They have requested transfer documents, a copy of the seller's offer for replacement land, and proof of due diligence procedures adopted by NSSA for land acquisition.
The lawyers have given NSSA a 10-day ultimatum to respond, failing which they will take legal action. Additionally, they have copied the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, requesting an investigation into the matter and a progress report within 10 days.
The Auditor General's report had raised concerns over NSSA's handling of the land purchase, with the seller offering replacement land worth US$1 million. However, NSSA is yet to accept the offer, fueling allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
Masiyiwa's lawyers have also urged ZACC to undertake an investigation into the matter.
"We kindly request that you deliver the requested documents to our client, through our office within 10 days of receiving this letter, failing which we are under strict instructions to compel you through the litigation process. We hope this will not become necessary.
"Meanwhile, our client understands that this matter is also of interest to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, and by copy of this letter, the Commission is hereby requested to undertake in writing, within 10 days of receiving this letter, to investigate the matter and make its progress report known to the members of the public," reads the letter.
