A storm is brewing at the Hyatt Regency Harare, formerly known as Meikles Hotel, as allegations of racism and labor law violations leveled against its manager, Jonas Amstad, threaten to tarnish the hotel's reputation.
In a damning letter addressed to the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, employees at the hotel have outlined a litany of grievances against Amstad, accusing him of making racist remarks and creating a hostile work environment. The employees expressed their disappointment, stating that Amstad's behavior contradicts the values and principles of the Hyatt brand.
The letter further reveals that the staff remains loyal to the hotel's owner, Mr. Ali Albwardy, whom they describe as a genuine and honest investor. They expressed their support for President Mnangagwa's vision for the hotel and the country's hospitality industry.
The allegations come at a critical time, as Zimbabwe prepares to host the 44th SADC summit next month. The government has been working tirelessly to ensure that the country provides top-notch hospitality to visiting dignitaries. However, the labor unrest at the Hyatt Regency threatens to cast a shadow over these efforts.
The hotel, which was acquired by the United Arab Emirates-based Albwardy Investment five years ago, underwent a US$30 million renovation to transform it into a world-class facility. The allegations against Amstad, therefore, are particularly damaging to the hotel's reputation and could potentially deter future investors.
As the situation unfolds, the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare is expected to launch an investigation into the matter.
