A student of Telone Centre for Learning has been arraigned before the courts accused of dealing in currency.
Takunda Chigiji, 23, Mabelreign, appeared before magistrate Simon Kandiyero at the Harare Magistrate's Courts charged with dealing in currency.
On July 26, 2024, at Harare Institute of Technology, the complainant observed that Chigiji and other students were intercepting students intending to pay tuition fees in United States Dollars in exchange of ZWG currency.
The court heard that the complainant informed the authorities and the security details to be alert.
It is alleged that on the same date, Chigiji approached the Harare Institute of Technology accounts office and made two swipe transactions of tuition fees on a CBZ Bank terminal number 78972988 of a HIT for the purpose of unlawful purchase of foreign currency as follows, swiped ZWG$682 from a First Capital visa card in the name of Marshall Mutogo, swiped ZWG$4 000 from an FBC Visa card number 4707830000375429 belonging to the name of Henry Machiri belonging to Tonderai of Ruwa.
After receiving approval transaction slip from the point of sale machine officer, Chigiji then got United States dollars from the student whom he paid for in ZWG currency.
At around 1635 hours, Chigiji visited the accounts office of the Harare Institute of Technology for the third time intending to swipe the third card an FBC debit card belonging to one professor with no further particulars known, a debit card that had earlier been swiped by one Nyasha Hamandishe and Roy Hunda at the same Institution.
Chigiji was seen to be exchanging ZWG currency for United States dollars by the complainant who ordered his arrest by the HIT security.
He was taken to the CID Commercial Crimes Division.
His arret led to the recovery of three debit cards, two approval transaction slips, US$744 and two phones.
