A damning indictment of the legal profession has emerged from a recent study conducted by renowned lawyer, Lloyd Mhishi. The research, part of his book "Being the best lawyer," reveals a disturbing trend among Zimbabwean lawyers: a pervasive get-rich-quick mentality is undermining the profession's integrity and competence.

A survey of 40 practicing lawyers, including 28 Chambers Global-ranked attorneys, found that a staggering 68% believe their peers are falling short due to an insatiable desire for quick financial gains. Lack of integrity was cited by 64% of respondents as a major factor contributing to professional failure, followed by a lack of knowledge (32%), laziness, poor ethics (25%), and inadequate mentorship (20%).

The study also highlighted the immense pressure lawyers face, with many struggling to cope with stress and mental health issues. A shocking number of lawyers are turning to alcohol and substance abuse to manage their workloads.

To address these challenges, Mhishi offers advice for aspiring lawyers, emphasizing the importance of hard work, passion, delivering on promises, learning from experienced colleagues, and patience. He also warns against the pitfalls of social media and stresses the need for continuous learning and development.
