The Harare city council has recently employed another company to install traffic lights and street lights in the CBD, a tender which was previously awarded to fraud-accused businessmen, Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu’s Juluka Enndo Joint Venture company.

The new company’s name and details of the tender have not been disclosed to the public.

The previous tender was awarded at an amount of over US$9 million, which resulted in the arrest of Town Clerk Hosiah Chisango and four other council officials together with the duo of Chimombe and Mpofu.

In Wednesday’s post-Cabinet briefing, Information minister, Jenfan Muswere reiterated the efforts by council to fulfil its task, as he was giving an update on infrastructure development meant for the summit. However, his revelations further posed confusion as to whether the council has engaged internal workforce to do the work or sought the services of a specific company.

“The City of Harare is seized with the installation of traffic lights at intersections and street lighting of the major roads. The local authority has been directed to speed up works,” he said.

City spokesperson, Stanley Gama did not respond in time for printing, to questions to him by this publication, concerning the tenets and provisions of the new arrangement that has seen a new company take over the tender.

The city has been torched by a number of storms emanating from their procurement procedures and land distribution that has sucked many high-ranking officials.
