Café Nush is for the sweet toothed

Monica Cheru

With its multiple branches in Harare, Café Nush is one of the most accessible places to meet and discuss business away from the stiff formality of the office.

Last week Monday, it was the Sam Levy Village one for me and a companion.

I got there first. I was glad to get a table in the covered patio on the car park side.

I would have taken the corner hideout table for its privacy, but cigarette butts left by the exiting patrons put me off.

Perhaps it’s time City of Harare or Zimbabwe Tourism Authority demand that restaurants list as smoking or non-smoking.

A friendly waiter soon popped up with a menu to ask my pleasure. I told him that I was waiting on someone and we would order together. But a water would be splendid until then.

15 minutes later with my companion still to arrive, I decided on a pizza. A great way to use the waiting time. And if I got stood up I could always ask the waiter to pack it and stuff my face on the way. Chicken mushroom sounded right.

Then of course my lunch mate turned up before the Pizza was done.

She chose half chicken and a salad. I changed my mind and decided on the half chicken as well. Served with fries for me. I chose the hot flavour which she went for the herbed variety.

To his credit the waiter kept a very cool and urbane face as I put in the new order. But I am sure he must have been trying to figure out how to make me understand that it was too late to cancel.

I put him out of his misery by telling him to pack the pizza for takeaway and serve the chicken.

I quite liked my chicken. Tender and the portion not too scary in these count-the-calories days.

But I rather think that a small salad should just be part of the meal and not have to expect one to add another dish.

My companion did not like her chicken. She said it was flat and the flavour not coming through at all. After stealing a taste, I had to agree.

It was tender but no taste to talk about. A big flat disappointment.

My son loved the pizza and we will be generous and accept that it was great, seeing as teen boys are just food hoovers and not exactly epicureans.

Café Nush does have a lovely selection of coffees and confectionaries and ideal for anytime meet ups, if you have a sweet tooth.
