Cameroon has recorded two deaths and six confirmed cases of the mpox virus since April 2024, with 40 additional suspected cases.
The country's health ministry, led by Health Minister Malachie Manaouda, has implemented enhanced surveillance, vaccination, and awareness campaigns to mitigate the risk of a local outbreak.
Despite the rise in cases, Cameroonian authorities clarified that the epidemic is not linked to the more virulent Clade 1b strain, which has caused concern in the Democratic Republic of Congo and surrounding regions.
Mpox, caused by a virus transmitted through animals and human contact, has spread across 14 African countries. It leads to fever, muscle aches, and painful skin lesions.
So far, Burundi, Congo-Brazzaville, and the Central African Republic have also reported numerous cases.
