Foreign Minister Frederick Shava has called for significant reforms in multilateral institutions, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to better address global security challenges.

Speaking at a pre-National stakeholder engagement in Harare, Shava emphasised the need for a more representative and effective Security Council to tackle issues such as climate change, poverty, and conflicts.

He also advocated for Africa to secure at least two seats on the Council to better address continental issues.

Shava highlighted Zimbabwe's contributions to regional peace and security, noting the country's role in peace missions and its commitment to dialogue and political cooperation within the Southern African Development Community.

“Our region enjoys relative peace and security, a result of its commitment to uphold its sovereign and territorial integrity. The peace that prevails in Southern Africa, continues to create a conducive environment for sustainable development, as there can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development.

“In instances where we have faced security challenges within our region, we have prioritised dialogue, and strengthening political cooperation, and enhancing democracy, good governance, and human security.

"Where requested, SADC has, and will continue to render military assistance to ensure the collective security of the region,” he said.

He stressed that peace is essential for sustainable development and reaffirmed Zimbabwe's support for collective security efforts.

The upcoming Summit of the Future, scheduled for September 22-23 in New York, will address these global challenges and seek solutions.

Inputs from stakeholder engagements will contribute to the summit's discussions and resolutions.
