Over 720 Dead in Lebanon as Israel Intensifies Strikes

More than 720 people were killed in Lebanon last week, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. Israel has dramatically intensified its strikes, claiming that it is targeting Hezbollah’s military infrastructure and senior commanders.

The escalation has raised alarms about a broader regional conflict, as Israeli officials have warned that if Hezbollah’s rocket fire continues, Lebanon could face destruction similar to what Gaza has endured since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war.

The violence has resulted in widespread displacement, with the International Organization for Migration estimating that more than 200,000 people have fled their homes in Lebanon. This displacement follows Hezbollah’s involvement in the conflict, launching rockets into northern Israel in support of Hamas, which initiated the war by attacking Israel on October 7.

Amid the ongoing violence, international calls for a cease-fire have grown louder. The United States, France, and other allies have urged for a 21-day cease-fire to allow humanitarian aid and halt the devastation.

Lebanon’s foreign minister has welcomed these efforts, condemning Israel’s actions and accusing the country of systematically destroying border villages.

Despite these appeals, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has remained steadfast, declaring that Israel is striking Hezbollah "with full force" and will not stop until its objectives are met.

Netanyahu, who cut short a visit to the United States, emphasised that Israel’s campaign against Hezbollah will continue, further dimming hopes for an internationally supported cease-fire.
