A local government employee, Everisto Nyamadzawo, has been arrested and charged with abusing his powers as a public officer. Nyamadzawo is accused of defrauding the state of US$77,000 through a fraudulent stands deal.

According to the prosecution, Nyamadzawo allegedly offered to sell residential stands in Chiredzi town to an informant who was looking to purchase property for resale. Nyamadzawo and his accomplice, Simbarashe Gurira, presented a fake lease agreement to convince the informant that they had the authority to allocate the stands.

The informant proceeded to sell the stands to unsuspecting buyers, collecting a total of US$77,000. However, the fraudulent nature of the deal was exposed when a dispute arose over the ownership of one of the stands. An investigation revealed that the stands were actually owned by the local government and that the informant had been duped by Nyamadzawo and Gurira.

Nyamadzawo was arrested and appeared before Harare magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa. He was granted bail of US$500 and is expected to return to court at a later date.
