Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union President Margaret Vera says the provision of portable toilets by Hitbay Sanitation Services for female golfers at Royal Harare Golf Club on World Toilet Day is a remarkable way to shed light on sanitation challenges faced by women.
“The lack of sanitation facilities or the cost of having the facilities available should not be reasons we are hindered to go out, exercise, play the game because we are afraid and unequipped to attend the incidents of nature,” said Vera.
Hitbay is celebrating World Toilet Day on 19 November, 2022 by providing portable toilets to the premium golfing club.
The portable toilets will provide convenience, wellness, freedom and comfort for women as golfing courses are historically designed exclusively for men.
Vera said that this is a matter that does not only concern athletes but women in almost every situation and access to proper sanitation services at all times for all should therefore be a national priority.
“Make sanitation available for women. It is my hope that every lady who access your pink toilets today will think about the next woman who has no access to sanitation facilities,” said Vera to Hitbay.
Mr Dylord Mutamuko from Hitbay Sanitation Services who also sits as the private sector focal point for the national multi-sector stakeholder consultative forum said that it is possible to provide such facilities if all stakeholders come together with a solutions orientation.
“We are therefore inviting other organisations for partnership in making accessible toilet services a reality,” said Mr Mutamuko.
He says the need for access to toilets is not a matter that can be limited to one day campaigns and that Hitbay is looking at long term partnerships that bring about real change.
“There are so many spheres where women are limited because of access besides the sporting arena. Women in construction, women in mining, vendors, service queues, and women at religious gatherings among others, are affected by lack of toilets.” Mr Mutamuko said.
In addition to superb toilet facilities, Hitbay units come with bins designed for women to comfortably take care of their menstrual hygiene.
“As Hitbay, we are here to understand the specific needs of each organisation and work out the best solutions,” said Mr Mutamuko.
World Toilet Day is observed in most countries in the world as a day to mark progress towards SDG6 which aims to “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”
Providing adequate standard toilet facilities for all is important to reduce risk of disease and ensure dignity.
