In a landmark victory for environmental protection, a Zimbabwean court has ordered the immediate cessation of alluvial mining operations in Penhalonga, Manicaland province. The ruling, issued on September 23, 2024, came in response to an urgent chamber application filed by concerned residents seeking to safeguard their environment from harm.

Three residents, Peter Dengure Maneswa, Blessing Tafadzwa Chigova, and Treasure Maziti, took legal action against miners Kainos Mhandu and Edson Rainford, who were conducting unauthorized mining activities along the Mutare River. The residents argued that the mining operations were causing significant environmental damage, including increasing the risk of flash floods and interfering with their property rights.

The High Court Judge, Justice Isaac Muzenda, agreed with the residents' arguments and issued a stern order prohibiting Mhandu and Rainford from continuing their mining activities in the area. The judge emphasized the importance of protecting the environment and ensuring that all mining operations are conducted in compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
