Vehicle registrations drop, road deaths rise in Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency has released data revealing a decline in new vehicle registrations and an increase in road accident deaths during the second quarter of 2024.

 According to ZimStats, only 15,890 vehicles were registered for the first time in the second quarter, compared to 24,428 in the first quarter. The registration of vehicles weighing up to 2,300kg decreased by 33.7%, while heavier vehicles saw a similar decline of 33.6%.

 Despite the decrease in vehicle registrations, road accident deaths increased by 9.6% during the same period. The Zimbabwe Republic Police reported 594 deaths and 2,783 injuries in the second quarter, compared to 448 deaths and 2,625 injuries in the first quarter.

 The number of candidates taking the certificate of competency test also increased during the second quarter, with 55,136 individuals participating. However, the pass rate was below 50% in most provinces, except for Harare and Mashonaland East.

 On a positive note, all airports across Zimbabwe recorded an increase in the number of flights during the second quarter. Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport experienced a significant increase of 18.7%, with 6,717 flights recorded compared to 5,659 in the first quarter.

In addition to the statistics mentioned above, the report also highlighted 54 rail accidents that occurred during the second quarter.
