United States President-elect Donald Trump has appointed billionaire Elon Musk to co-lead a newly created Department of Government Efficiency, alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.

The initiative, announced through a statement by Trump’s campaign press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, on X, seeks to restructure federal agencies, eliminate excessive regulations, and cut wasteful spending.

Trump’s vision for the Department of Government Efficiency, which he has described as “the Manhattan Project of our time,” is to address the US$6.5 trillion in annual government spending and “drive out massive waste and fraud.”

The department will function as an advisory board, providing outside perspectives on streamlining government processes. Trump has set a deadline for the board’s work, aiming for completion by July 4, 2026.

In a series of posts on X, Musk offered a glimpse into his approach, suggesting that DOGE will reveal “insanely dumb spending” and publish a leaderboard of wasteful expenditures. Musk has criticised the current government structure, stating that the U.S. has over 400 federal agencies, which he called “more than enough,” and pointed to specific spending examples to highlight inefficiencies.

Musk’s appointment to head the department comes as he was a key figure and sponsor of Trump’s re-election campaign, which ultimately toppled fellow presidential aspirant Kamala Harris, along with sponsor billionaires such as Bill Gates.
