Chitungwiza Town Council's resolve to offer a dismissed worker a termination package of ZWG$2.06, equivalent to 22 cents for each of his 14 years of service is likley to result in more costs for the council as the former staffer has said he will not accept the paltry offer.
The local authority outlined the depreciation in value in a letter written to Honest Garise:
You were owed USS5 156.95 when your contract with Council was terminated in August 2015.
Please be advised that in February 2019 there was a transition from USD to RTGs at a rate of 1: 1 which meant that US$5156.95 became RTGS 5156.95.
The RTGS 5156.95 was then converted to ZIG on 5 April 2024 at a rate of 1:2498.7242 and it became 2.06 21G.
Council now owes you 21G 2.06
The matter is likely to go back to court, costing the local authority more in legal charges as Garise has said he will not be “swindled” through currency conversion tactics.
"I want my cash! They fired me on three months' notice and now they're refusing to pay!" Garise has said.
