Government has rolled out measures to combat the expected rise in road accidents during the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays, focusing on saving lives through prompt medical interventions and enhanced road safety regulations.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona highlighted plans to deploy ambulances along major highways and establish dedicated hospital wards for road accident victims. These efforts aim to capitalize on the critical "golden hour" after an accident, significantly improving chances of survival.

Statistics from the Zimbabwe Republic Police reveal a concerning pattern: during December 15–26, 2023, the country recorded 1,194 accidents and 87 fatalities. The Easter holidays also saw an increase in accidents, with 27 fatalities this year compared to 29 in 2023.

In addition to medical readiness, the government is introducing a Road Accident Fund to provide financial relief for victims and their families. Furthermore, Statutory Instrument 118 of 2023 mandates speed-limiting devices in all Public Service Vehicles to address excessive speeding.

These initiatives form part of a comprehensive strategy to promote safer roads and reduce the tragic toll of holiday traffic accidents.
