Health Sector Projects Near Completion

Government is making strides in its health infrastructure development, with significant projects nearing completion. 

During a post-cabinet briefing on Tuesday, Minister of Health and Child Care, Honourable Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, provided updates on key initiatives aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery nationwide.

Dr. Mombeshora revealed that repairs on cancer treatment machines at Mpilo Hospital are 90% complete, with ongoing work on the CT scan and chiller system. “The project is progressing well, and we are confident that it will greatly improve cancer diagnosis and treatment services at Mpilo Hospital,” he said.

The Minister also highlighted that the replacement of gel batteries with lithium batteries at 15 health facilities, including Bota and Gutu Rural Hospitals, is 99% complete. This upgrade ensures reliable power for critical medical services, strengthening the resilience of healthcare systems.

Progress was also noted on the construction of the National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory at Mpilo Hospital, with the superstructure 85% complete. This facility is set to enhance tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment capabilities.

Other updates include: Chitungwiza Central Hospital: Construction of a water tank is 55% complete, aiming to improve water supply.

Lupane and Chinhoyi Provincial Hospitals: Oxygen plant rooms are under construction, with completion expected by December 2024 to ensure stable oxygen supplies for critical care.

Radiology upgrades: X-ray machines have been installed at Chikurubi Maximum Prison Hospital and Inkomo Barracks Hospital, with similar progress reported at other hospitals.

Maternal and child health remains a priority, with ongoing renovations at 10 health facilities, including Mt. Darwin, St. Albert’s, and Siakobvu. These upgrades include waiting mothers’ shelters and theaters, ensuring safer environments for expectant mothers.

“These projects demonstrate our dedication to improving access to quality healthcare for all Zimbabweans. We remain resolute in addressing the nation’s healthcare challenges,” said Dr. Mombeshora.
