Government to Establish Regulatory Authority for Private Investigators and Security Guards

Cabinet has approved the principles of the Private Investigators and Security Guards (Control) Bill, paving the way for tighter regulation of private security services. This new legislation seeks to standardize the licensing of individuals and companies providing these services and enhance public safety.

At a post-Cabinet briefing in Harare on Tuesday, Information Minister Jenfan Muswere announced the creation of the Zimbabwe Private Security Regulatory Authority, tasked with setting and enforcing industry standards.

Muswere explained that the Bill introduces new licensing criteria for private investigators. Amendments to section 7 of the Act will require applicants to undergo thorough background checks, complete specialised training, and attain a government-recognized qualification before being granted a license.

Licensed investigators will also gain the power to employ an unlimited number of other investigators without prior regulatory approval.

The regulatory framework aims to promote compliance and professionalism in Zimbabwe's private security sector, ensuring it effectively complements public safety efforts.
