Government Unveils Presidential Solarisation Project to Empower Rural Communities

In a bid to address Zimbabwe’s enduring energy challenges, the government has announced an ambitious Presidential Solarisation Project set to launch in 2025.

The initiative, expected to span five years, aims to provide affordable solar energy solutions to 200 000 rural households annually.

Information Minister Jenfan Muswere outlined the project during a post-cabinet media briefing on Tuesday, emphasising its role in promoting sustainable development and enhancing rural livelihoods.

“The Presidential Solarisation Project is a livelihoods initiative designed to deliver renewable solar energy to households across Zimbabwe’s eight rural provinces,” Muswere stated.

The program will provide state-of-the-art solar technologies—including batteries, inverters, panels, and cables—capable of powering various appliances such as light bulbs, radios, televisions, phone chargers, laptops, small refrigerators, submersible pumps, and Wi-Fi systems.

The Rural Infrastructural Development Agency will oversee the project through an inter-ministerial steering committee that will integrate expertise from local universities.

To further empower communities, local youths and women will be trained to install and maintain solar systems in districts and villages, creating jobs and enhancing skills development.

The initiative will be financed through government funds and partnerships with stakeholders, ensuring access to affordable and advanced solar energy systems.
