The Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed the deaths of two poachers following a shootout with Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority rangers in the Musingwizi area of Makuti on December 21, 2024.
The confrontation occurred during a routine anti-poaching patrol aimed at curbing illegal hunting activities in the area, known for its rich wildlife, including elephants, lions, and rhinos.
ZimParks rangers, who have faced increasing threats from heavily armed poachers, responded to the threat as part of their ongoing efforts to protect the country’s biodiversity.
Zimbabwe has been grappling with a rise in poaching activities, particularly targeting elephants and rhinos for their ivory and horns, which are highly sought after in the illegal wildlife trade.
According to ZimParks, over 20 elephants were killed by poachers in 2024 alone, many through cyanide poisoning, which also endangers other species.
Efforts to combat poaching have intensified, with the government introducing stiffer penalties for wildlife crimes and increasing patrols in national parks.
However, resource constraints and the involvement of sophisticated criminal networks continue to pose significant challenges.
Authorities are urging the public to support conservation efforts by reporting suspicious activities in protected areas.
ZimParks and ZRP reiterated their commitment to safeguarding Zimbabwe's natural heritage despite the ongoing threats.
