Two suspected peddlers were arrested in Beitbridge for possession of approximately 7 kilograms of dagga. Fainurse Chitanga (37) and Prosper Chitanga (38) were taken into custody by detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics on January 3, 2025.
According to Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the dagga was concealed in three plastic buckets in the luggage compartment of a Makwenda bus. The bus was intercepted at the Masvingo turnoff in Beitbridge, thanks to a tip-off received by the authorities.
This arrest is part of a broader effort to combat drug trafficking in Zimbabwe. Recently, 30 drug dealers, including eight women, were convicted and jailed for between three months and one year ยน. The police have also been proactive in intercepting drug shipments, including a recent recovery of 5.5 kg of marijuana in a Harare-bound bus .
Chitanga and Chitanga are expected to appear in court to face charges related to the unlawful possession of dagga.
