Government disputes human waste claims in Lake Chivero deaths

Zim Now Writer

The Zimbabwean government has rejected claims that the recent deaths of thousands of fish and four rhinos at Lake Chivero were caused by human waste or raw sewage discharged into the water reservoir. Local Government minister Daniel Garwe attributed the deaths to industrial waste deposited into the lake by private companies.

Garwe emphasized that human waste is not the culprit behind the calamity, but rather the hazardous industrial waste that has contaminated the lake. The minister assured citizens that investigations are underway, and those responsible will be held accountable.

"We are working closely with the Minister of Environment to ensure that the culprits are brought to book," Garwe said. "We have summoned Harare City Mayor Jacob Mafume and the town clerk to discuss this issue and find a solution to the industrial waste being discharged into Lake Chivero."

This development comes after social media reports emerged of thousands of fish dying due to poisoning in Lake Chivero. The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) had also reported the deaths of four rhinos, three zebras, four wildebeests, four fish eagles, and several goats and cattle due to consumption of contaminated water from the lake .

Lake Chivero, a vital water source for Harare, has been struggling with pollution issues, mainly due to sewage discharge, industrial and household waste, and agricultural runoff.
