Mutare city officials have expressed interest in partnering with Geo Pomona, a leading waste management company in the region, to address the city's waste management challenges.

This development comes after Mutare Mayor, Clr Simon Chabuka, and town clerk, Blessing Chafesuka, visited the Geo Pomona Waste Management facility in Harare on Tuesday.

During the visit, Chabuka acknowledged that the city was initially unaware of the massive project underway at Geo Pomona, but are now keen to learn from their initiatives.

"We have seen and learned a great deal. To be honest, we were initially unaware of the massive project underway here," Chabuka stated.

"Now, as we return to Mutare, we will convene with others to discuss how we can create something sustainable, similar to what we have witnessed today."

Chafesuka emphasised the importance of partnerships between local authorities and private entities with expertise in waste management.

"While the City of Mutare may not have the capacity to undertake such a project independently, we can explore structuring a partnership, in accordance with the procedures outlined by the Central Government," Chafesuka noted.

Geo Pomona Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya welcomed the interest from Mutare city officials, stating that the company is eager to collaborate with local authorities to provide effective waste management solutions. Nguwaya highlighted Geo Pomona's success in transforming thousands of tonnes of waste into energy and reusable materials, reducing Harare's reliance on landfills and contributing to cleaner urban spaces.

The company has already been entrusted with conducting waste collection in Harare.

"We are eager to collaborate with local authorities to provide effective waste management solutions. I'm pleased that they have visited us, as this firsthand experience will demonstrate our approach to managing waste. In fact, they are not the first to do so, as the City of Bulawayo has also paid us a visit," Dr Nguwaya noted.

"Notably, we have been entrusted with the responsibility of conducting waste collection in Harare. We have already procured the necessary equipment, which is currently being shipped. By the end of February, all equipment is expected to arrive, and the President is scheduled to launch the initiative."
