High Court Judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi has reserved judgment until January 23 in a matter that could make or break Walter Magaya's ambitions to lead the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA). The verdict, set to be delivered just two days before the scheduled ZIFA elections on January 25, has left the football fraternity on the edge of their seats.
At the heart of the matter is Magaya's disqualification from the ZIFA presidential race due to his failure to produce the required five O-Level certificates. The charismatic prophet and founder of Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries has been accused of attempting to manipulate his way into the top position, alongside former ZIFA vice president Gift Banda.¹
As fate would have it, the High Court's decision to reserve judgment coincided with the release of O-Level results, leaving many to wonder if Magaya's educational credentials would have met the required standards. The timing has only added to the drama and suspense surrounding Magaya's ZIFA election bid.
Magaya's legal challenge seeks to postpone the ZIFA elections, potentially paving the way for his reinstatement in the presidential race. However, with the elections just around the corner, time is running out for the embattled prophet.
As the football community waits with bated breath for the High Court's verdict, one thing is certain – the outcome will have far-reaching implications for the future of ZIFA and Zimbabwean football as a whole
