Town house tainted: Marara's $8,000 Gadget bonanza raises yebrows

A bombshell testimony by Harare City Council's executive assistant, Matthew Marara, has sparked outrage and renewed concerns of corruption and mismanagement within the council. Marara revealed that he received a staggering $8,000 for gadgets, including a laptop, cell phone, and iPad, while he was on suspension from 2020 to May 2023.

The compensation package, approved by a committee appointed by Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume, has raised eyebrows due to its inflated prices. Marara received $3,256 for newspaper subscriptions, $3,700 for a laptop, $2,550 for a cell phone, and $1,920 for an iPad, among other benefits.

Marara's justification for the compensation was that he was entitled to these benefits during his suspension. However, the timing of the payment has sparked concerns, as the City of Harare is struggling to provide basic services to residents due to a severe lack of funds.

This controversy is not Marara's first brush with scandal. In 2020, he was suspended over corruption allegations involving residential stands, and he received a whopping $329,000 compensation package after his suspension.²

The commission of inquiry into governance issues at the Harare City Council is ongoing, and Marara's testimony has only added fuel to the fire.
