A shocking revelation has emerged from the Commission of Inquiry investigating the City of Harare, as Mayor Jacob Mafume exposed a suspicious transaction involving the Council's medical aid fund. The fund allegedly splurged US$1 million on a house in Ruwa, sparking outrage and concerns about financial accountability.
Mafume described the deal as a "grand theft" exercise, disguised as an investment, and questioned why the Council's employees were being denied medical treatment while funds were being misused. The Mayor's concerns deepened as he revealed that the title deeds for the property had not been received by the City of Harare.
During the inquiry, Mafume defended his decision to attend meetings of the Harare Municipal Medical Aid Society (HMMAS), stating that his involvement was necessary to address the alleged misuse of funds. "US$1 million doesn't just disappear," he emphasized. "If council workers are being denied treatment while their money is being misused, I have a duty to ask questions."
