Shawper Investments has been taken to court for allegedly defrauding a complainant of US$13,240 in a fraudulent residential stand deal.

The company, represented by Lloyd Chifamba, 39, of New Marimba Extension, appeared before the Harare Magistrates' Court facing fraud charges.

According to the State, in mid-October 2024, the complainant came across a Facebook page named Shawper Investments, which was advertising residential stands in Mabvuku, Waterfalls, and Glenview, Harare.

Interested in purchasing a stand in Glenview, he contacted the company and registered his intention to buy.

The complainant was invited to Shawper Investments' offices at Suite 704, 7th Floor, Regal Star Building, 25 George Silundika, Harare, where he met with Chifamba to negotiate the price. He was allegedly charged US$14,000 for Stand Number 13141, Amalinda, Glenview 7, Harare.

Initially, the complainant proposed transferring the funds directly into Chifamba’s bank account, but Chifamba instead instructed him to deposit the money into a Zimbabwe Women’s Microfinance Bank account under the name Tauzeni Jaracha.

On October 26, 2024, the complainant was asked to pay US$40 to be placed on the waiting list and an additional US$200 as a registration fee. The following day, he was instructed to deposit US$13,000 into Jaracha’s account from his First Capital Bank account.

Once the payment was confirmed, Chifamba issued the complainant a provisional allocation agreement and took him to view the stand. He then instructed the complainant to pay the remaining US$1,000 in monthly installments of US$100 over ten months.

However, when the complainant followed up on the stand, Chifamba allegedly became evasive. Realizing he had been duped, the complainant reported the matter to the police, leading to Chifamba’s arrest.

As a result of the scam, the complainant lost US$13 240.
