U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to begin negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
The decision was made during a 90-minute phone call on Wednesday, during which the two leaders discussed a range of geopolitical issues, including Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, and the global economy.
Following the call, Trump announced that negotiation teams would begin work immediately. He also confirmed plans to speak directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to inform him of the discussion and the next steps in the peace process.
“The historical ties between our nations, particularly from World War II, remind us of the benefits of cooperation," Trump said, expressing optimism about future diplomatic efforts. He also revealed that he and Putin had agreed to reciprocal visits in the near future.
Trump has appointed senior officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, to lead the U.S. delegation in the talks. Expressing confidence in their ability to achieve a breakthrough, Trump emphasized the need for swift action to end the conflict.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the call, noting that both leaders discussed prisoner exchanges and other bilateral concerns. Putin reportedly assured Trump that Russia remains open to diplomatic resolutions, while Trump reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to implementing agreements reached in the discussions.
After his conversation with Putin, Trump reached out to Zelensky, reassuring him of the U.S.’s commitment to supporting Ukraine. Zelensky expressed willingness to work closely with Washington to facilitate a peace deal, stressing that Ukraine remains determined to end hostilities while safeguarding its sovereignty.
