In a bid to enhance healthcare access for incarcerated individuals, Delta Corporation has donated USD10 000 through the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe to support breast, cervical, and prostate cancer education and screening in Masvingo Province prisons.
The initiative seeks to bridge the gap in healthcare services for prisoners, who often face challenges in accessing timely medical care. Cancer remains a major global health concern, and early detection is crucial in reducing mortality rates.
The outreach program covered multiple correctional facilities, including Masvingo Remand, Mutimurefu, Gutu, Bikita, Zaka, Chiredzi, Chikombedzi, Mwenezi, and Chivi prisons. It began with educational sessions aimed at empowering inmates with knowledge on cancer prevention and early detection.
Prisoners learned how to conduct self-breast examinations and identify early warning signs of cancer.
A total of 282 men and women underwent cancer screening as part of the initiative.
Patricia Murambinda, General Manager of Corporate Affairs at Delta Corporation, underscored the company’s commitment to community well-being, stating:
"This project has enabled us to take a step towards empowering communities to fight against cancer, which is a major public health concern.
"The provision of education and screening will assist in cancer prevention and improve the quality of life for cancer patients, their families, and communities through timely, sustainable, and evidence-based interventions. This has been made possible through a generous grant from Delta."
