A joint initiative between Zimbabwe and China is restoring vision to hundreds of Zimbabweans suffering from cataracts. The “Bright Journey” programme, officially launched at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare, aims to provide free cataract surgeries to approximately 600 patients.
The programme brings together Chinese and Zimbabwean ophthalmologists to perform the life-changing procedures, giving patients a second chance at clear vision. Many beneficiaries, who had struggled with deteriorating eyesight for years, expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity.
“For the past five years, I had problems with my eyesight, and my left eye had even lost vision. Thanks to the Zimbabwean and Chinese doctors, I was operated on and can now see clearly,” said 68-year-old Tendai Moyo, one of the patients who underwent surgery.
Another patient, Patricia Ndlovu, shared a similar experience. “I could not afford an eye check-up, but this programme provided screening and surgery for free. I had my bandages removed today, and I can now see perfectly,” she said.
Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding, emphasized the broader impact of the initiative. “Health is the foundation of dignity and opportunities. Through the ‘Bright Journey’ programme, we are opening the windows of sight again for our Zimbabwean brothers and sisters suffering from cataracts.”
Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, highlighted the sustainability of the initiative, noting that this is the second edition of the programme.
He pointed out improvements such as the provision of advanced medical equipment and training for Zimbabwean healthcare professionals.
“We are set to operate on more than 600 patients. The backlog is significant, but this programme is a step in the right direction. It also benefits our local experts through training and knowledge exchange,” said Dr. Mombeshora.
Beyond surgeries, the “Bright Journey” programme includes academic exchanges and medical training to equip Zimbabwean professionals with skills to continue providing high-quality eye care services in the future.
