BEIJING — China has once again called out the United States for selfishly derailing global progress through unilateralism and protectionism.
"This is a typical move of unilateralism, protectionism, and economic bullying," said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian during a media briefing this week in Beijing.
He labeled U.S. trade practices as "economic bullying," saying that such measures will not only harm China and the European Union, but the entire international community.
Lin Jian said that the U.S. decision to impose punitive tariffs violates World Trade Organization principles.
Lin Jian hinted at increasing isolation of the U.S., as American president Donald Trump upends the world order with unilateral decisions.
He said China and the EU both view the WTO as central to ensuring stability in global commerce.
While Lin deferred specifics of the BRICS position and any planned meetings to relevant authorities, he underscored BRICS’ role in opposing unilateralism and safeguarding the multilateral trade order.
He said the two parties, which together represent over a third of the global economy and a quarter of world trade, share a commitment to a rules-based multilateral trading system and advocate for economic globalization.
Meanwhile, the U.S. president has displayed that he will continue to play hardball and says, "The ball is in China’s court," implying that China must concede to his demands.
Lin Jian indicated that the Chinese position remains unchanged: the Asian nation is open to negotiations but will not be bullied.
He said the tariff war was "started by the U.S." and that negotiations can only take place when there is "equality, respect, and mutual benefit."
"China does not want to fight trade wars but is not scared of them," Lin declared.
