Canada's Liberal Party, under the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney, has won the federal election held on April 28, 2025, securing a fourth consecutive term in office. While the Liberals are projected to hold 168 seats in the 343-seat House of Commons, they fall just short of the 172 seats required for a majority, indicating a minority government.

Carney, a former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, assumed leadership of the Liberal Party in March 2025 following Justin Trudeau's resignation. His campaign focused on national unity and reducing Canada's reliance on the United States, particularly in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's aggressive trade policies and annexation rhetoric. In his victory speech, Carney stated, "Trump is trying to break us," emphasizing Canada's sovereignty and the need to strengthen ties with Europe and Asia.

The election results also brought significant changes to Canada's political landscape. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre lost his Ontario seat in Carleton to Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy, marking a notable political upset. The New Democratic Party, led by Jagmeet Singh, suffered substantial losses, with Singh losing his seat and subsequently announcing his resignation.

Carney's administration faces immediate challenges, including managing strained U.S.-Canada relations and addressing domestic issues such as rising living costs and housing shortages. He has pledged to build a new housing industry using Canadian technology and resources to tackle the housing crisis.

International leaders, including France's Emmanuel Macron and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have congratulated Carney on his victory, signaling global support for his leadership during this pivotal time for Canada.

The formation of the new cabinet is expected in the coming days, as Carney prepares to lead the country through a period of significant domestic and international challenges.
