Zimbabwe has signed two strategic Memoranda of Understanding with Toyota Connected Corporation and Pegara Japan, marking a major step toward accelerating the country’s digital transformation and enhancing industrial competitiveness.

The agreements were concluded during the Zimbabwe Business Forum held on the sidelines of the 2025 Osaka Expo, in the presence of President Emmerson Mnangagwa

Dr. Thomas Wushe, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, signed on behalf of Minister Mangaliso Ndhlovu.

The MoUs follow a prior engagement held four months earlier in Harare, during which representatives from Toyota Connected and Pegara Japan visited Zimbabwe to explore collaboration opportunities.

The partnership with Toyota Connected Corporation will give Zimbabwean enterprises access to advanced digital technologies and data analytics tools. The MoU aims to:

  • Drive digital transformation through automation and optimisation of business operations;
  • Lower production costs and improve product quality via smart systems;
  • Introduce Kaizen methodologies, Japan’s renowned continuous improvement practices, to enhance productivity and eliminate waste;
  • Boost corporate earnings and national economic growth by increasing industrial efficiency.

“This partnership will help Zimbabwean industry transition toward smarter, more efficient operations that are globally competitive,” said Dr. Wushe.

The MoU with Pegara Japan focuses on leveraging cutting-edge technologies to solve societal challenges and stimulate industrial growth through public-private partnerships. Key objectives include: establishing new businesses and technical partnerships within Zimbabwe’s innovation ecosystem; expanding local industrial capabilities and export potential and advancing sustainable development across sectors.

According to officials from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the agreement is expected to foster long-term collaboration that will strengthen Zimbabwe’s industrial base and create new economic opportunities.

President Mnangagwa welcomed the deals as evidence of Zimbabwe’s commitment to innovation-led development and global engagement.

“These agreements reflect Zimbabwe’s firm commitment to industrial modernization and technology-driven growth. We welcome the support of our Japanese partners as we position our economy for the future,” said the President.

The Zimbabwe Business Forum in Osaka is part of a broader effort to deepen international trade, investment, and innovation linkages through proactive diplomatic and business engagement.
