A woman was attacked by an elephant at Nyakasanga Bridge the 321km peg along the Harare-Chirundu Road and her body was devoured by hyenas on Wednesday.
Police are therefore appealing for information that can help identify the deceased, who is yet another victim of human-wildlife conflict.
Said the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in a notice posted on their official Twitter handle: “The ZRP is appealing for information which may assist in the identification of a female adult who is suspected to have been attacked to death by an elephant before her body was devoured by hyenas on 07/12/22 at Nyakasanga Bridge at the 321 km peg along Harare –Chirundu Road.”
Police added that the victim’s body parts were found scattered at the scene and appealed to anyone with information to report at any nearest police station.
“Another life lost due to Human -Wildlife Conflicts. We urge all stakeholders to come together and have a lasting solutions,” responded Green Institute to ZRP's tweet.
The country is also witnessing a spike in incidences of deadly elephant attacks, while on the other hand, farmers complain over the destruction of their crops.
According to government statistics, around 10 people are killed every month by elephants, with 60 people already killed by elephants since the start of 2022.
Government has established a relief fund to cushion victims of human-wildlife aimed at catering for hospital expenses and funeral cover.
The payments cover three categories namely; death, maiming, and injuries emanating from human-wildlife conflict.
