Maranatha High School entreprenuerial team won the Company of the Year competition grand prize.
“And the Grand winner for the 12th Africa COY is Hekima Inc.
Congrats our Changemakers. The team also won three other awards.
We are so proud and excited about this achievement,” announced Junior Achievers Zimbabwe on their Facebook page.
Hekima Inc’s winning venture is Study Buddie, a personalised digital study guide that takes pressure off a student and allows them to work at their own pace for peak achievement.
The big win means the Zimbabwean team will represent the Africa Region at the Ralph de la Vega Global Entrepreneurship Competition.
“This will bring together COY winners from the six regions where JA Worldwide operates to compete for awards, $15,000, educational opportunities and more,” said JA chief executive Simi Nwogwugwu during a press conference in Lagos, prior to the winner announcement.
The competition organised by non-governmental organisation, Junior Achievement saw nine African country secondary schools fighting for the top honour.
After emerging as national winners, Team Hekima Inc had to impress a panel of international business professionals who serve as COY judges.
They successfully put their acumen to the test in presenting the achievements of their business in numerous formats in order to win the prestigious title of JA COY and other prizes from the sponsors.
The other countries represented were Eswatini, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
Ms Nwogugu said that the competition would equip the students with an entrepreneurial mindset to solve problems in their communities.
The theme for the 2022 edition was “Fueling Changemakers.”
Ms Nwogwugwu said that the young entrepreneurs who compete at the JA Africa’s COY go through qualifying competitions at national and sub national levels, competing against thousands of youth startups to qualify for the regional competition.
She added that the programme would transition them into employment and transform them into employers.
“Given the increasingly complex set of global challenges facing young people around the world from unemployment to climate change and food shortage, we focus on equipping our students to be solution providers,” said Ms Nwogugu.
“These students will bring about positive change within their communities while developing businesses that generate wealth,” she said.
Ms Nwogwugwu said all the finalist students had demonstrated great resilience and innovation in grappling with these challenges.
