Amateur boxers to wash away ring rust

Amateur boxers have a change to get in the ring after a long break, in a tournament in Harare on Saturday, courtesy of a promotion by Tinofara Mutovongi.

Mutovongi is hosting the ten-bout event at the Julius Nyerere Hall, Harare Showgrounds, in partnership with the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation

Ngoda, a brewery company, Vhat and Ixar are sponsoring  the event.

“We have realised that there has been very little action on the amateur side of boxing hence our decision to chip in and afford the young boys and girls a chance to showcase their fighting skills. We will have musical entertainment as part of the programme,” said Mutovongi.

In contrast to the past years when there used to be a number of national tournaments on the ZBF calendar, it has not been the case of late.

Tournaments are platforms national team coaches use to select boxers for regional and international championships which include the Zone 5, All-Africa Games and the Olympics.

Amateur boxers partake in national duty and, unlike their professional counterparts, they do not get paid, but receive medals.
