President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called on the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to broaden their scope of operations to address emerging security threats beyond traditional warfare, including economic instability, climate change, cyberattacks, pandemics, and terrorism.

Speaking at the 45th Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day commemorations at Rufaro Stadium, Mnangagwa praised the ZDF for safeguarding national sovereignty while playing an active role in civil operations such as flood rescue missions, grain distribution, and campaigns against drug and substance abuse.

He commended the military’s peacekeeping efforts under SADC, the African Union, and the United Nations in conflict zones including South Sudan, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ethiopia. The President also highlighted ongoing military training exchanges with China, Russia, India, and South Africa as part of efforts to strengthen operational capacity.

Mnangagwa reported significant progress in demining operations, with only 4% of the original minefields remaining. He cited the completion of the Rusitu–Muzite clearance in Manicaland as a major milestone in restoring safe land for communities.

The President said improving conditions of service for military personnel remains a priority, noting ongoing salary reviews, upgrades to military hospitals, and the construction of housing for service members. He also praised ZDF-led community development projects that have delivered schools, clinics, and other infrastructure across the country.

Describing the ZDF as a “disciplined and trusted People’s Army,” Mnangagwa urged the forces to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting peace and stability as Zimbabwe pursues its Vision 2030 development goals.
