A Zvishavane man has been jailed for five years after being convicted of unlawful possession of electricity transmission materials belonging to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC).

Michael Nyoni (33), a self employed welder from Makacha Village, appeared before the Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court where he was found guilty of unlawfully possessing 10 galvanized angle irons valued at US$341.88.

The court heard that detectives, acting on a tip-off, raided Nyoni’s workshop at Fadzaniai Shop, Mapazuli Business Centre, on March 3, 2025, where they recovered the electricity transmission equipment.

Prosecutors told the court that Nyoni failed to produce a valid licence authorising him to possess the property.

A ZETDC Loss Control Officer confirmed that the recovered material belonged to the power utility.

In sentencing, the magistrate said unlawful possession of electricity infrastructure was a serious crime that endangered public safety and disrupted essential services.
