The Zimbabwe Republic Police has warned bus operators to ensure their bus drivers desist from reckless driving and speeding to avoid unnecessary loss of lives on the country’s roads.
This comes after a fatal road accident which occurred at the 160km peg along Harare-Nyamapanda Road on Tuesday which claimed the life of a Rimbi Tours conductor while seven others were seriously injured.
Police said the behaviour of both drivers is highly regrettable and intolerable.
“The ZRP implores bus operators to reign in their drivers to ensure that they abide by road rules and regulations.
“Operators have a vicarious responsibility to control their drivers and ensure that drivers are not dragged into dangerous and reckless highway races with other buses for passengers.
“Drivers are licensed to protect lives on the roads and set a good conduct in terms of road safety,” police said.
The Rimbi bus driver rammed into the back of a Shacman Tipper which was travelling in the same direction.
In a video which has gone viral on social media platforms, the drivers can be seen blocking and racing each other along the road.
Meanwhile, there are claims that the Rimbi Tours driver holds a Class Two driver’s license when passenger vehicles such as buses require a Class One licence.
