Mbuya Stella Chiweshe, one of the pioneers and ambassadors of Mbira music, is no more. She was 77.
She passed on at her home in Kuwadzana today, Friday January 20.
Rector Kandemiviri, a family spokesperson confirmed the death saying, “She wasn’t feeling much well of late, coupled with age. The last time she came home she was saying her days are almost up and as such, she needed to settle back home.”
An award-winning musician, she toured many countries in Europe and other continents. She was married to a German national, Peter Reich. Among the countries she introduced the mbira instrument to were Spain, Germany, Australia and the United States of America.
She was born Stella Rambisai Nekati Chiweshe on 8 July 1946 in Mujumi Village, Mhondoro, Zimbabwe.
