Man arrested over 26 burglaries in 2 months

A tip-off from members of the public has led to the arrest of a suspected serial burglar linked to 26 unlawful entry and theft cases across Bulawayo, police have confirmed.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police said Thulani Jere, 43, was picked up at his home in Pumula East following information supplied by residents, bringing to an end a burglary spree that stretched from February 2024 to April 2026.

Police say Jere allegedly targeted townhouses, lodges, bed-and-breakfast establishments and residential properties, helping himself to cash, cellphones, household goods and electrical equipment. The stolen property is valued at US$44 585, R7 100 and ZW$9 000.

The arrest yielded part of the loot, including ZW$9 000 in cash, a battery charger, electric drill, angle grinder, welding machine, lithium battery and clothing, with recovered items valued at US$3 050.

Authorities are now hunting for an alleged accomplice, identified as Xolani Moyo, who remains at large.

Police have urged anyone with information to contact the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp 0712 800197, or report to the nearest police station.

In a statement, the ZRP credited the breakthrough to public cooperation, describing community tip-offs as a critical weapon in crime fighting. The police also used the moment to highlight ongoing efforts to modernise policing and strengthen public engagement, recently showcased at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair where the force won first prize in the Best Security Services Exhibit category.
