Zimbabwe’s National Sports Stadium is set to reopen through an operational test match scheduled for Sunday, 31 May 2026. The match marks an important step after several years of renovation and limited use of the facility.
The Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture confirmed the fixture on Friday, saying it will serve as a comprehensive systems check of the facility ahead of the return of full-scale domestic and international football.
Officials said the test match will assess critical operational areas including spectator movement, safety and security systems, seating installations, pitch quality, and overall stadium readiness.
Beyond the technical assessment, the event is being positioned as a symbolic return of top-flight football to Zimbabwe’s largest stadium , a venue that has long been central to the country’s sporting identity but has faced prolonged periods of limited or suspended use.
The National Sports Stadium has effectively been out of full international service for several years. While it has occasionally hosted limited domestic fixtures and non-elite events, it has not consistently met international standards required by bodies such as CAF in recent years.

The stadium’s decline in compliance became evident in the late 2010s, when concerns were raised over its facilities and safety standards. By around 2020–2021, it had already become increasingly unsuitable for major international fixtures, with Zimbabwe’s senior national team often forced to stage “home” matches in alternative venues outside the country.
A more comprehensive renovation programme was then initiated, leading to a prolonged closure phase from roughly 2022 onward, during which major upgrades were carried out. This means the stadium has been undergoing significant redevelopment and functional downtime for approximately three to four years, while its reduced international usability stretches back close to five years depending on how “full operation” is defined.
According to the ministry, the revamped stadium now features bucket seating, improved amenities, upgraded playing surfaces, and enhanced spectator facilities aligned with international standards.
“The Operational Test Match is intended to assess stadium systems, spectator flow, safety protocols, seating arrangements, pitch standards and overall operational readiness,” the ministry said.
PSL and ZIFA are expected to announce participating teams in the coming days, with strong public attendance anticipated.
