Zimbabwe's growing combat sports movement will once again come under the spotlight this Saturday when the 2026 BancABC Combat Sports Series: From Grit to Glory II roars into life at The Performance Hub in Groombridge, Harare.

Organised jointly by The Pride Boxing Club and Shumba Boxing Academy, the event marks the third instalment of a competition series that has steadily established itself as one of the country's most important platforms for developing boxing and mixed martial arts talent.

The tournament, which is sanctioned by the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF) and the Zimbabwe Mixed Martial Arts Association (ZMMAA), will feature an exciting programme of amateur boxing and amateur MMA contests, bringing together some of Zimbabwe's emerging combat sports prospects.

Doors open at 4pm, with amateur boxing bouts scheduled to begin at 5pm before the action shifts to amateur MMA contests at 8pm.

Speaking ahead of the event, tournament director Wesley McDade said the series was becoming an important vehicle for athlete development and exposure.

"This is now our third event and we are excited by the growth we have witnessed since we launched the concept. Our objective has always been to create a sustainable platform where young combat sports athletes can compete regularly, gain valuable experience and showcase their abilities before a wider audience," said McDade.

He noted that the previous edition successfully incorporated professional boxing contests, helping bridge the gap between amateur and professional competition.

"The last event was particularly significant because we included professional boxing bouts. It demonstrated that Zimbabwe has the talent and appetite for high-quality combat sports entertainment. The response from athletes, coaches, sponsors and fans was overwhelmingly positive, which encouraged us to continue building on that momentum."

McDade said Saturday's card would continue the organisers' vision of nurturing talent while creating a professional environment for competitors.

"Our focus remains athlete development. Whether it is boxing or MMA, these athletes need opportunities to test themselves under competitive conditions. Every event gives them another step towards achieving bigger goals, whether nationally, regionally or internationally."

The veteran boxing administrator added that the organisers were already looking ahead to the future, with another edition pencilled in for August.

"This is not a one-off initiative. We have a long-term plan and the next event is already scheduled for August. Consistency is key if we are to grow combat sports in Zimbabwe and provide meaningful opportunities for our athletes."

The series has increasingly become a meeting point for two rapidly expanding sporting disciplines. By combining boxing and MMA under one roof, organisers have succeeded in attracting diverse audiences while exposing athletes to new fan bases and sponsorship opportunities.

McDade believes the model is helping strengthen the country's overall combat sports ecosystem.

"Combat sports are growing in Zimbabwe, but growth requires collaboration. By bringing together boxing and MMA communities, we are creating a larger platform that benefits everyone involved—from athletes and coaches to promoters and sponsors."

A crucial ingredient behind the event's continued success has been strong corporate backing from sponsors who have embraced the vision of growing grassroots and elite combat sports.

Leading financial institution BancABC headlines the sponsorship portfolio, while support has also come from Atlasmara, Nashua Zimbabwe, Rossi Quick Fit, The Performance Hub, Neon Event Solutions, and Rooney's Child Welfare Foundation.

McDade paid tribute to the sponsors for their commitment.
